It was Friday. It was after work. And it was sunny, which in Seattle one must never waste. So, I bundled up the dogs and headed out lovely walk in the sun.

If only I had known…

Image

We meandered for a few miles, heading to a small, hidden public park near Lake Forest Park that has a dock on Lake Washington. It provided a nice bench for me to rest and some warm places for Sage and Ottis sunbathed while they watched the ducks. So far, so good.

Image

As the sun began to set, the pups and I yawned, stretched

and gathered ourselves for the long walk home.

Image

And that’s when things started to go… a bit downhill.

About a mile away from the car, Sage decided she wanted to be carried.

Image

So, in my shirt she went!

But with the pressure of Sage on my tummy, I quickly realized I had to pee.

Like, a lot.

Image

So, there I was, shuffling along with a 15lb dog in my shirt and a bursting bladder. I had at least half a mile still to go at this point. And I quickly realized… I wasn’t going to make it.

It was one of those moments in life when, in full desperation, you start to consider otherwise completely inconceivable solutions. Such as, dropping trou right on the Burke-Gilman Trail in broad daylight, amidst a stream of commuter bicyclists. I won’t lie. It crossed my mind.

I squeezed my thighs tight and picked up my pace.

Finally my car came into sight, but I knew there was no way I could make it all the way home. This dam was about to burst. So, I did what any self-respecting woman would do, if she had a brand new car and didn’t want to christen it with a puddle of urine. I shuffled the dogs into the car, ran to the passenger side, threw open both the doors, positioned myself between them, dropped my pants… and peed.

Right then. Right there. And a little bit on my foot too.

I’ve never felt better in my life.

People often tell me how lucky I am to be a pet photographer. And it’s true. I love my job. But it’s not always a piece of cake. It takes a lot of patience, creativity, flexibility, improvisation, humor, more patience and a dose of luck. Here is a little behind-the-scenes peek at today’s photo session with Mari, my foster dog who is available for adoption through Motley Zoo Animal Rescue.

.

It went sorta like this…

.

.

Hey, Mari! Look! I have really yummy TREATS!

All you have to do is look over here…

.

.

.

No, really! I promise… these treats are so YUMMY!

Don’t you want to SIT for one of these amazing, delicious treats?

.

.

.

Ok, ok. Forget the treats. What if I make some strange noises?

Beep, beep, beep!!

.

.

.

Seriously? Now you are just messing with me on purpose.

.

.

.

Oh! There is a dog walking by? Perfect!

Ok, you hold still and watch the dog and I’ll just sneak in some photos. Cool?

.

.

.

Hold it… Hold it… Got it!

And she was a lot of fun.

Did I mention she was a natural?

Panda was such a diva!

All in all, it was a great session!

This weekend I have the lovely pleasure of pet-sitting my prior foster, Coco. She was one of my first Taiwan rescues. Here is her Before photo and her After photo. I took the After photo during her foster time with me. Coco will always have a very special place in my heart and I feel blessed to still be able to share in her life.

.

.

For added joy, Coco’s newly adopted brother named Leon is also staying with me. Leon was rescued from a high-kill shelter in California.

Leon is a happy little ball dog.

More to come.

Woof.

A few weekends ago, I had the extra pleasure of pet-sitting both Maddy and Charlie! With the rare streak of sunshine and an apartment bursting with dogs, we soon took to the streets… or, rather… the hiking trails!

Maddy, Ottis, Charlie and Me!

.

Saturday morning, Charlie, Maddy and Ottis accompanied my friend Betsy and I on the 3mile Twin Falls hike. The big dogs braved a dip in the chilled South Fork Snoqualmie River, while Ottis wanted nothing to do with the freezing mountain runoff, thank-you-very-much.

.

Later that evening, the dogs and I ventured out again to join our furry friends at Magnuson Dog Park. The dogs enjoyed some romping and another an evening swim at sunset.

.

On Sunday, the dogs and I took a 3mile stroll around Magnuson Park, walking through their newer established nature preserve, past their sports fields, along their Lake Washington trails and ending at the dog park for one last weekend swim.

A job well done, if you ask me!

So,  I have a confession. I’m a knitter. And knitting takes time. Lots of time. This is why I have already started working on Christmas gifts. No, really. I swear! It had absolutely nothing to do with a yarn splurge… (awkward cough)… Well… either way, here are my first two finish gifts: pom-pom scarfs for my little cousin and niece. Sage and Ottis have kindly offered to model the snuggle-worthiness of these adorable scarfs.

Sagely

Because of Sage’s autoimmune disease and general health, she often misses out on much of the fun. This weekend especially was packed full of playtime with Ottis, Charlie  and Maddy that Sage was not able to join. I try to carve a little daily one-on-one Sage time. This weekend, our bonding came in the form of an impromptu photo-shoot! She is such a ham-bone! :D

So, it’s Spring. And what better way to call in the new season than knitting a sweater!

Oh… No?

Well, ok. So, this is not exactly a timely project, but who am I to challenge the time-honored knitting tradition of procrastination? Two seasons behind schedule, I am tackling my first knit sweater. It will be for Sage. Sage is my 15lb, 11yr old Boston Terrier. And yes, this counts as my first knit sweater. Just because my four-legged fur-child will be donning my masterpiece doesn’t make it any less of a sweater. It might help for you to imagine a tacky holiday wreath embroidered on the front? Do you see the sweater-quality of the piece now? Good.

For this project, I have chosen a simple pattern aptly named  Easy Dog Sweaters. You can find the free online pattern here. It’s a great first sweater project because everything is knit on straight needles and then seamed together.

My tools:

  • US size 6 bamboo needles, for the ribbing.
  • US size 8 bamboo needles, for the main body.
  • Vanna’s Choice Mustard (860-170),  Kelly Green (860-172) and Dusty Green (860-173E)… for some lovely stripes!
  • Embroidery needle, for seaming.

First step, I compared Sage’s measurements to the measurements of the dog model used to create the pattern. This will ensure proper fitting. Sage’s measurements were bigger in some places, and smaller in others. I used a little cross-multiplication to calculate the proper number of cast-on stitches and rows needed.

.

My mom would be so proud of my math.

.

And now comes the fun part: knitting!

.

Creatively yours,

Brooke Mallory… and Sage
