People often tell me how lucky I am to be a pet photographer. And it’s true. I love my job. But it’s not always a piece of cake. It takes a lot of patience, creativity, flexibility, improvisation, humor, more patience and a dose of luck. Here is a little behind-the-scenes peek at today’s photo session with Mari, my foster dog who is available for adoption through Motley Zoo Animal Rescue.

.

It went sorta like this…

.

.

Hey, Mari! Look! I have really yummy TREATS!

All you have to do is look over here…

.

.

.

No, really! I promise… these treats are so YUMMY!

Don’t you want to SIT for one of these amazing, delicious treats?

.

.

.

Ok, ok. Forget the treats. What if I make some strange noises?

Beep, beep, beep!!

.

.

.

Seriously? Now you are just messing with me on purpose.

.

.

.

Oh! There is a dog walking by? Perfect!

Ok, you hold still and watch the dog and I’ll just sneak in some photos. Cool?

.

.

.

Hold it… Hold it… Got it!

My knitted donations for Old Dog Haven’s craft fair this weekend are all set to go! One Mossy Brick scarf, two Eyelash Infinity scarfs and two Manner Headbands.

.

If you are looking for unique, handmade holiday gifts, yummy treats for the two and four-legged loved ones in your life or looking for something fun to do this weekend, while supporting local senior dogs in need, this fundraiser is for you!

Old Dog Haven is an amazing 501(c)(3) non-profit dog rescue organization in Washington state. They take in senior dogs who have been abandoned, abused or neglected and in need of a proper care, love and shelter when no one else will. All the dogs in their care receive quality vet care (which is all too often a first for many of these poor, neglected souls) and are placed in one of their comfortable, loving and skilled Final Refuge foster homes where these senior citizens get to live out the rest of their lives comfortably. For some of their “younger” seniors, these dogs are available for adoption.

 .

The courage, selflessness and resilience of Old Dog Haven’s Final Refuge foster parents who take in these dogs over and over, knowing they are often in the last stage of their lives, is awe-inspiring and such an inspiration. May we all learn something from their commitment to these animals.

Creatively yours.

My mom joined me and the dogs at PAWSwalk 2011! PAWS is an amazing shelter organization that I’ve worked closely with through my years in rescue. The 5k fundraising walk trails through my favorite local park, Seattle’s Magnuson Park. I was pet-sitting Coco and Leon that weekend, so they got to join in the fun! The day was sunny and warm, with a nice breeze off the water.

This weekend I have the lovely pleasure of pet-sitting my prior foster, Coco. She was one of my first Taiwan rescues. Here is her Before photo and her After photo. I took the After photo during her foster time with me. Coco will always have a very special place in my heart and I feel blessed to still be able to share in her life.

.

.

For added joy, Coco’s newly adopted brother named Leon is also staying with me. Leon was rescued from a high-kill shelter in California.

Leon is a happy little ball dog.

More to come.

A few weekends ago, I had the extra pleasure of pet-sitting both Maddy and Charlie! With the rare streak of sunshine and an apartment bursting with dogs, we soon took to the streets… or, rather… the hiking trails!

Maddy, Ottis, Charlie and Me!

.

Saturday morning, Charlie, Maddy and Ottis accompanied my friend Betsy and I on the 3mile Twin Falls hike. The big dogs braved a dip in the chilled South Fork Snoqualmie River, while Ottis wanted nothing to do with the freezing mountain runoff, thank-you-very-much.

.

Later that evening, the dogs and I ventured out again to join our furry friends at Magnuson Dog Park. The dogs enjoyed some romping and another an evening swim at sunset.

.

On Sunday, the dogs and I took a 3mile stroll around Magnuson Park, walking through their newer established nature preserve, past their sports fields, along their Lake Washington trails and ending at the dog park for one last weekend swim.

So,  I have a confession. I’m a knitter. And knitting takes time. Lots of time. This is why I have already started working on Christmas gifts. No, really. I swear! It had absolutely nothing to do with a yarn splurge… (awkward cough)… Well… either way, here are my first two finish gifts: pom-pom scarfs for my little cousin and niece. Sage and Ottis have kindly offered to model the snuggle-worthiness of these adorable scarfs.

Sagely

Because of Sage’s autoimmune disease and general health, she often misses out on much of the fun. This weekend especially was packed full of playtime with Ottis, Charlie  and Maddy that Sage was not able to join. I try to carve a little daily one-on-one Sage time. This weekend, our bonding came in the form of an impromptu photo-shoot! She is such a ham-bone! :D

Yes. The rumor is true.

I, Brooke Michelle Mallory, have completed my first knit sweater.

It is for my sassy pants Sage.

And there is nothing Sage loves more than a photo-shoot.

But being this cute is hard work. It requires a lot of beauty sleep.

For Sage’s sweater, I used Talking Tails’ Easy Dog Sweaters pattern.

It was the perfect pattern for my first knit sweater.

And it could be a great starting place for you too!
